I'm a science major although I don't work in the field. My husband, on the other hand, is a finance major but works in the science field.
You would think this would create all sorts of interesting scientific discussions around our household. And sometimes it does. Other times, it leads to more simplistic discussions {typically after a long day of work} about design where I ask my husband if one of the perks of his job is that we can order lab furniture supplies from his company. The answer, each time, is "no."
Why the interest in lab furniture supplies? Actually, once you start to look around, you will notice how some of our favorite designers and decorators have used lab supplies to create rooms that are interesting and varied. Put simply, their work ends up looking just a bit different than everyone else's. And that's what makes people like me stop and take a second look.

Cabinets from laboratory supply company. Image via Martha Stewart. On a side note, the photo above comes from one of my all time favorite Martha Stewart editor houses ever. Full house tour, if you are interested, can be found here.

From one of my favorites: Erika at Urban Grace. Her top cabinet above came from a hospital.
What kind of lab furniture might be interesting for use in a house design, other than the great examples above?
1. Acrylic Pegboard. Looking for a coat rack or other storage place for kids clothes? Or, how about a drying rack for dishes? From here.

How about the same board in black?

2. Cabinets. There are an amazing amount of options out there for using laboratory cabinets. Stainless steel and glass front doors come to mind and are easy to find on the Internet.
The cabinets below are both stainless steel and look texturally rich. Both found here.

3. Artwork. Vintage anatomy and physiology posters are creative and unique pieces of art. Clearly evidenced by the very cool anatomy poster in this house from Country Living:

I would love a vintage medical cabinet, I just wish they werent so hard to find and so expensive. They sure are cool looking though :)
I'm not a science major but I'm a sergeant major and I can source tanks. Sorry, I'm losing the run of myself there. I really like the first photo with the medical cabinet.
